Course Description:

With over 30 years of practical experience in Yoga, Shiatsu, Chinese Medicine, Martial Arts and thousands of hours spent treating and teaching, I came to deeply understand the great healing power of Yoga.

Essentially this completely natural approach has profound effect, however success depends on personal involvement and effort from patients. Yoga therapy self-empowers, helping the patient to reclaim his/her health and take life into his/her own hands.

In this way Yoga Therapy is truly holistic leading to health, greater awareness, more balance, less ego and more love.

This 300 hour Yoga Therapy Certification, 500 hour Master Yoga Teacher certificate, will teach you how to evaluate your patients health using various methods of palpation as well as observation, listening skills, taking detailed case histories and interpreting the signs and symptoms of imbalance and disease.

The course will include the following areas of study:

Asana, in-depth asana and vinyasa practice

Relaxation poses and techniques

Ethics

Course Objectives:

Trainees will deepen their knowledge and understanding of yoga asanas.

Trainees will deepen their understanding of props for all asanas.

Trainees will deepen their understanding of yoga psychology.

Trainees will deepen their understanding of Chakras, Nadis and Meridians. 

Trainees will deepen their understanding of yoga pedagogy.

Trainees will deepen their observation and listening skills.

Trainees will deepen their understanding of yoga philosophy.

Trainees will learn hands-on adjustment skills.

Trainees will learn hands-on assessment tools.

Trainees will learn practical hands-on healing skills. 

Trainees will deepen their meditation and mindfulness skills.

Materials:

This course will provide all materials on yoga asanas and anatomy and physiology.

Before the course students will be provided with a welcome pack which includes information on dress code, how to get here as well as the recommended reading list.

Prerequisites:

Students enrolling on this Yoga Therapy 500 Hour Course are expected to be fully qualified yoga teachers at 200 hour level.

Evaluation Procedure and Grading Criteria

Students will be required to have completed all the set assignments by the end of the course.

Students will be expected to show proficiency and improvement in their own asana practice, teaching and understanding including: a) anatomy and physiology, b) evaluation and treatment procedures c) 3 case histories.

The practical evaluation is based on continual assessment and students are expected to complete a minimum of 90% of contact hours.

There will also be a written exam which all students must pass in order to obtain the 500 hour Master Yoga Teacher certification.

Attendance:

Trainees should attend a minimum of 90% of the course. Should trainees miss more than this minimum they will need to agree with the teacher which modules to re-take.

SYM reserves the right to charge additional fees for these catch up modules.

Accreditation:

This course is fully accredited by Yoga Alliance International.

Our graduates are able to register on the Yoga Alliance International and International Yoga Federation database upon completion of the course and will receive YAI and SYM certification.

Course Syllabus: 

A. Assessment Tools:

Palpation and reading of abdomen, the back, chakras, key diagnostic acupuncture points and meridians for evaluation of organ function and energy levels.

Observation and reading of front and back, facial diagnosis, hands and feet, posture and movement, body type and emotions, asanas and the meridians, asanas and the chakras.

Listening skills : how to listen, tone of voice, emotion.

Interviewing and questioning: energy levels and pain, digestion, diet, stools, urination, sleep, menses, medical history, lifestyle, family history, relationships, work and stress.

B. Practical Healing Tools:

Asanas and their relation to the chakras, organs, hormones, emotions and character.

Asanas and their relation to the Chinese meridians, working the vital organs and emotions with meridian stretching.

Asanas: The detailed use of props; belts, cushions, blocks, bolsters, blankets and chairs to help each individual no matter what age or body shape or difficulty to practice with correct alignment, breathing and ease.

Asanas, Pranayama, Bandhas, Relaxation and Meditation as tools for regaining health.

Hands-on healing techniques: Chakra balancing, stretching and working the Chinese meridians, acupressure, abdominal massage, stimulating the vital organs and the immune system, adjustment techniques for hips, shoulders and neck, releasing tension and pain from the body.

Understanding and application of the yoga model for psychology: the chakras, koshas, left and right brain functions and the gunas.

The importance of meditation, relaxation and spiritual philosophy; treating heart and soul.

Nutrition, releasing tension and pain from the body principles and practical application.

C. Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology of the following systems, symptoms and diseases and their treatment with Yoga and Yoga Therapy:

General symptoms of ill health: eating disorders, stress, headaches, insomnia, allergies, fatigue, depression, trauma, addictions.

The respiratory system: asthma, bronchitis, coughing, common cold.

The circulatory system: hyper/hypotension, palpitations, varicose veins, arteriosclerosis.

Muscles, joints and bones: backache, sciatica, arthritis, lordosis, scoliosis, osteoporosis, ankylosing spondylitis.

Digestive system: indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, anorexia, bulimia, stomach cramps, hepatitis, gallstones, obesity, nausea, gastritis, abdominal distension, diabetes, cancer (bowel, stomach, pancreatic, liver etc.), regurgitation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hemorrhoids, anemia, cravings and eating disorders.

Nervous system and the head: neuralgia, epilepsy, MS (multiple sclerosis), stress, paralysis, stuttering, Parkinson's.

Urinary system: cystitis, incontinence, edema, prostate enlargement.

Eyes, ears, nose and throat: tired eyes, diminishing eyesight, nose bleed, sinusitis, tinnitus.

Skin and membranes: eczema, dermatitis, skin cancer, psoriasis, ulcers.

Endocrine system: diabetes, infertility, thyroid problems.

Reproductive and gynecological: dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, infertility, sexual dysfunction, menopause, insufficient lactation, ovarian cysts, impotence.

Immune system and degenerative disease: HIV / AIDS, Rheumatoid arthritis, allergies, lupus, cancer, Lyme’s disease, ME, Alzheimer, herpes, shingles.

Psychological symptoms related to emotional, mental and spiritual issues: Anxiety, fear, depression, trauma, stress, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attention deficit disorder (ADD), phobias, addictions, eating disorders.

Pregnancy and childbirth.

Children, teenagers, old age and death.

Daily Schedule:

07:30 - 08:00: Meditation & Pranayama

08:00 - 10:00. Asana & Relaxation

10:00 - 10:30. Break; breakfast

10:30 - 12:00. Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology

12:00 - 15:30. Lunch and Break

15:30 - 17:30. Yoga Therapy, assessment tools: theory and practice

17:30 - 19:30. Yoga Therapy, practical healing tools

19:30 - 21:00. Dinner and break

21:00 - 22:303-Evenings per week: chanting, DVDs, supervised practice

Four evenings are free plus one full free day per week. Students are expected to do up to 1 hour of karma yoga per day plus unsupervised homework or non-contact hours.
